A new project

Turning THIS:

Into THIS:

After cooking for Thanksgiving and having to flip through the hundreds of scraps of paper from magazines or family we've collected through the years I decided to digitize our recipie collection and print them out on index cards to be properly filed. Sounded good in my mind until I realized just how many recipies we have and how long it takes to type up each one. I think I'm on #95 or so, but it's so rewarding when I can throw one away and see the pile getting smaller.

...don't you fall off that ladder!

Hmmmmmmmm... Michael's words were prophetic unfortunately. While putting up some Christmas lights in our trees outside I sort of lept/fell off of our ladder once I realized that crashing to the ground was imminent and landed on my feet with some pinache (if I must say so myself) but my left food landed on the edge of the ladder (OUCH.

Under construction!

Please pardon the mess with our blog. I love owls but got tired of our old blog design so I decided a remodel was needed. I fell in love with these "Beetlejuice" like swirls so I decided to go with that feel for the blog. I'll be making changes to the pages and flow over the next few days. I just wanted to get something more stream lined and less cluttered feeling hopefully making the blog more readable.

The aftermath...

Gosh, we only cooked dinner for ourselves this year. My family went to see my sister and Michael's family stayed in Shreveport and Michael was "on call" for the Navy so we had a quiet day at home. I seriously only just showered - yikes! BUT we wanted to fry a turkey. Gosh Michael is a trooper b/c that is a CHORE.
When I saw Michael walking through the house with this I have to admit I was a bit hesitant about the whole "frying thing" but Michael did a great job and he was just being extra prepared :)

Here are the buckets of lard post frying. My dogs really really really wanted to eat that up - yuck!

For dessert I made molten chocolate and carmel lava cakes. Michael said it was one of the best things he's ever eaten. Take a look:

This is after you invert the ramekins onto a plate and the ooey gooey deliciousness comes pouring out:

This is right out of the oven:

If someone's interested just comment me and I'll type up the recipies. I used one for the cake and kind of adapted another one for the caramel filling.

Happy Turkey Day!!!

This morning the temperature in Fort Worth dropped down to 40 degrees which ROCKS so we decided to go on a family walk. Ezra got to wear his new hat I bought at a craft show and the dogs got to break out their old winder coats. Ezra as of late insists on doing things "by myself" and he loves to "walk" Clovis. If you try to take the leash away from him God help you. So I decided to take some pics of our "boy and his dog." I also got some pics of our lovely fire!!! Yea the first fire of the season. Also here are some of our Christmas decorations.

Free printables!!!!!

I finally scanned in these vintage childrens' playing cards that my mom bought me at a garage sale for $0.50!! I saw the "Animal Rummy" cards on sale on Amazon for $25.00 so I think she got a good buy! There are so many ways you can use these images, especially if you are good with photoshop and can edit out the wording. I didn't scan the entire decks just one of each image. If you're interested in getting the entire deck please comment me and I'll scan the rest in. Also I appologize for them being crooked but it is my first time scanning(I know I'm lame). Enjoy!

Another GREAT blog giveaway!

You guys should definitly check out www.tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com there are lots of great craft ideas and also there's an awesome giveaway going on right now. See the blackboard above, well they are giving away FOUR of them in different shapes. Great for first day of school photos, birthdays, you name it... I recommend you go and check out Jen's blog ASAP and plan to sit and stay awhile :)

Monetizing a blog?

What are you guys thoughts on monetizing a blog? I find blogs with lots of ads frustrating just as I find it frustrating when I go to a retail store and the sales people greet me when my big toe crosses over the thresh hold with "can I help you find anything?"---grrrrrrr. I just want to say, "yes, find me someone who will ignore me and leave me alone!"
BUT at the same time I need extra cash, so I'm thinking about it. Thoughts?

Let the drooling begin!

These are Hershey bar and cheesecake filled chocolate cupcakes from www.alanskitchen.com with Amanda's delicious chocolate buttercream icing. (www.kevinandamanda.com - found under her Brownie Batter cupcakes recipie)

Fresh out of the oven!

The gooey delicious goodness within....

I have since made German Chocolate cupcakes which were great but not my favorite. I really love cupcakes with a gooey center so I tried to make potato chip cookie dough butter cake cupcakes with a vanilla/cream cheese buttercream icing with candied pecan chips.... sounds AMAZING right... WRONG! what a disappointment. Hours of prep turned into pretty dull cupcakes that ended up in the trashcan. I had fun creating them though with my lovely sister in law, Jennifer.

I'm not done creating though. My mom makes an AMAZING chewy fudge icing that I'm planning on filling some cupcakes with but I haven't decided what to top them with yet. Because Amanda's buttercream icing recipie is crazy good I think I may just stick with that one. I'll let you guys know how they turn out.

BTW I WILL learn how to make a word into a link. My friend Paula did her best to explain it to me but I just have been too lazy to truly figure it out, sorry guys.

Ezra's Christmas tree

I LOVE Christmas time and couldn't wait to get up some decorations. I decided to decorate a tree for Ezra's room with a "candy/sweets" theme. Here are some pics of the final result. The tree itself is around 4 feet tall and is prelit. I got it from Lowe's. I mention this because the other tree I got from Garden Ridge was total crap-ola. I wouldn't recommend a tree from there.

This is a photo from the box of the tree I bought from Garden Ridge. It was supposed to be 6 ft. tall...

And this is what came OUT of the box...

Yummy rice crispy edible crafts for Thanksgiving!

These little turkeys are made with cocoa krispies, pretzels, peanut butter and candy corn - Gobble them up!
I think lots of kids would have a great time decorating their own tee-pees (spelling?)! Can't wait until Ezra is old enough for this one!

Cutest drum stick ever! Using both cocoa and regular rice crispies.
Use some royal icing and these crispy candy corns would be great for an office Thanksgiving party or even in individual vases as place holders if you ice each persons name onto them.

All of these recipies can be found at www.ricekrispies.com I highly recommend you guys check out the site!

Love this new blog design!!

Shannon wanted something that reflected what she typically blogs about so I created the little mini-buttons in the header to showcase those items like adoption, baking, and homeschooling. She wanted it to be really busy which I think we accomplished :) So now I'm excited to see how she adds to it with her family photos!

The past few days...

Well on Saturday Michael and I received a BIG surprise. We got a call about a referral of a one year old baby boy from Congo! We were shocked to say the least, as we had no idea that we even made the cut off for families trying to use an agency operating out of DRC that opted to halt all adoptions until things in country became more calm. Since we hadn't heard anything in like 6 months, we were thinking.. is this God ordained that we accept this child. We knew nothing about him except his estimated age and that he was abandoned. No medicals or any physical exam info. We prayed about it and after a lot of back and forth we decided to give up his referral.
We have no idea if he has heart disease, or HIV/TB/Hep and we'd have to come up with $18K really quickly and start the paper chase really quickly. We only just got licensed for foster to adopt and decided to stick with that plan for now.
I know I'll likely always wonder, "what if" but I just pray that there's another family out there sitting by the phone just waiting for the phone call that will change their lives as was the case when we got our referral call for Ezra.

Christmas custom blog!

The Andrews family asked me to make a Christmas blog for their family devoted to their "different" Christmas. Check it out by clicking on the header below!

Huge giveaway!

The Bricker Family is doing a huge giveaway to help raise funds for their Ethiopian adoption. I recently made a custom blog for Jessie and she asked me to donate to her giveaway. I will be giveing away a FREE custom blog design and an Adopt Africa magnet. So click on the button above and go to her blog to enter for a chance to win!

Yum Yum!

Yesterday I made these delicious strawberry cupcakes made with real strawberries! I'd always heard about "Sprinkles" cupcakes mainly b/c of Katie Holmes and how much she loves them so I decided to make my own. I found the recipie on www.marthastewart.com

I added extra bits of strawberry in the batter and in a few I added some chocolate chips. The cake portion tastes a little more like a muffin then cake but the icing is sooooo super sugary that the less sweet cake work great together.

Next up are Candy Bar cupcakes!!!

Does this make me crazy?

So if you listen to 106.1 to the Kidd Kraddick morning show you'll know that they do a segement called "Does that make me crazy?". Well I'm seriously thinking of sending in a comment about my "wack-a-doo" behavior regarding Ezra's Woody doll from Toy Story.
I was telling Michael the other night that I have got to stop watching the movies with Ezra b/c if I see Woody on the floor in an uncomfortable position after being dropped or thrown down by Ezra, I'll rearrange his "body" in a more comfortable looking way. Or if I get out of the shower and I see Woody on the floor I have to hurry up and grab a towel or push Woody so he doesn't "see" me naked. Now I ABSOLUTELY know that he is NOT real and that I'm silly to do it, but there's still that weird nudge in the back of my mind that makes me do these things.
So the other day when Woody's "voice box" got stuck and he's like, "Hey Howdy, hey howdy, hey howdy" over and over and over I just hit him on the ground like usual to make it stop, well this time I think it was a bit to hard b/c HIS HEAD FELL OFF!!! Yikes! So you can imagine how bad I felt for decapitating Woody if I can't stand for his arms to be in an odd position.
For a few days Ezra would carry around Woody's head in one hand and his body in another, and put his head on and off like you would put a hat on and off... it was all just TOO much. So we got a new Woody doll and I threw the old one away. And just to prove to myself that I was crazy for feeling guilty I threw some left over fettucini on top of him in the trash can. But Woody's eyes were still peering up at me from under the noodles and I just couldn't take it, I had to get the him out of my house so I didn't have to see his sad little headless body asking me, "why... why..?"
