Calling all those handy with a needle and thread...

Okay so I'm signing up to take a sewing class in the Fall BUT I have to bring my own sewing machine along. I have never sewn, sat next to a sewing maching, or even touched one so I have NO idea what to buy. I need your help and suggestions for what would be good for a beginner but be versatile for all fabric types and projects. Please leave me a comment or e-mail me with your suggestions.

I just bought a cheapo one for my first sewing machine and can do everything except sew piping. My friend LOVES her "BROTHER" sewing machine and bought that at Walmart!

I followed the Amazon ratings. Wanting to spend around $2-300, I got a brother one that i really like and is very user friendly. Happy sewing!

Mine is a Kenmore that my hubbie bought at Sears for me years ago. It is not fancy but more than does the job.
